Workplaces need quotas to increase women’s representation and curb toxic hyper-masculinity

In a recent The Lighthouse article, Alison Pullen discusses the power of quotas and why Australia needs them. Prof Pullen said that quotas are the only way to introduce change quickly and should be applied not just to politics but in every profession, institution and organisation in Australia. The interview also responded to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s consideration of quotas in the Liberal Party to address the imbalance of women in state and federal parliaments.

Prof Pullen said that to achieve gender equality in Australian institutions and organisations required having quotas as well as calling out privilege and change the system. Quotas are the way forward to rebalance the numbers of men and women in institutions and organisations, which currently do not represent the broader society. This will also help address the prevalence of male-dominated cultures and hyper-masculine toxic behaviours in the workplace that discourages more women from being involved in rising to leadership positions.
